Martin Baker is a young tennis player who has spent the last couple of years training and gaining experience of professional tennis in Australia

During a training trip to Florida in 2004, Martin was assessed by some of the top people in the sport. The general opinion was that he was excellent for his age but needed to watch his fitness levels and diet. They advised he spend more time in the gym as they thought he was going to be a big lad which could be detrimental to his agility on court.

In an e-mail on his return to the UK Martin wrote: The tennis was absolutely brilliant, we had to be on court every day at 6:30am to start our warm up, then at 7 I had a 1 to 1 lesson for an hour with a really good coach called Rodrego, then we did lots of basket feeding drills which made you move a  lot and some volleying until 11:30, where we stopped for 2 hours to have our lunch, have a swim and get ready for the evening tennis. I would get back on court at 1:30pm where we did some fitness drills and some target drills, then I would play 3 sets against somebody and I only lost 1 out of 3 matches then did hour an and a half of fitness.

After a personal appraisal, 15 year old Martin thanks his Florida Training Centre coach and Nick Bollitierri

It was really good to be working with other enthusiastic kids from all over the world. This was pretty much repeated every day in that first week at Bollittieris. The 4 of us that went all were in a tournament (the second biggest tournament in the world) but sadly we all got knocked out in the first round, the standard was world class.

The second week we went to another tennis camp (called Saddlebrook) because the courts were all in use of the tournament, we had more training sessions there and played more matches against some of the kids that were there full time. Later that week we all went to Bushgardens which was absolutely fantastic had never been on a roller coaster before and it felt good to go upside down, the best thing about it was there were no queues so we could keep going on again and again.
